Mondulkiri: Should you visit this Cambodian Province? (2026)

Getting to Mondulkiri from Phnom Penh

Mondulkiri Province is approximately 370–390 km (230–242 miles) from Phnom Penh, depending on where you're staying. Most visitors base themselves in Sen Monorom, the provincial capital.

I've visited Mondulkiri several times during both the rainy and dry seasons. In my experience, the first hour of the drive from Phnom Penh was the roughest. The road was quite bumpy, making that part of the journey a little uncomfortable. Fortunately, the road conditions improved significantly after that, and the remainder of the drive was much smoother.

Where Is Mondulkiri?

Located in eastern Cambodia, Mondulkiri is known for its cool climate, rolling hills, pine forests, coffee plantations, waterfalls, and elephant conservation projects. Its peaceful atmosphere, refreshing weather, and stunning natural scenery make it one of Cambodia's most popular mountain destinations.

When Should You Visit?

November to January

November to January is widely considered the best time to visit Mondulkiri. Temperatures are cool, humidity is low, and the skies are generally clear, making it perfect for sightseeing, hiking, visiting waterfalls, and exploring coffee plantations. The comfortable weather also makes outdoor activities much more enjoyable. During this time, I usually wear a light sweater to stay warm in the cool mountain air, especially during the mornings and evenings.

February to May

February to May is warmer, but thanks to Mondulkiri's higher elevation, temperatures remain more comfortable than in much of the rest of Cambodia. It's still an excellent time to visit if you don't mind warmer afternoons while enjoying cool mornings and evenings.

June to October

June to October is the rainy season. The forests become lush and vibrant, the waterfalls are at their most impressive, and the landscape transforms into a beautiful sea of green. There are also fewer tourists, making it a peaceful time to explore.

During one of my visits, it rained throughout our stay. Although the rain prevented us from spending much time outdoors or enjoying the swimming pool, it also created a magical atmosphere. Watching the rain fall over the mountains and seeing the mist settle across the hills afterward made the scenery feel even more peaceful and refreshing.

Where Should You Stay?

Hilltop Observatory and Resorts

Hilltop Observatory and Resorts is one of the most popular places to stay in Mondulkiri. Perched on one of the province's highest points, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding hills and forests while remaining only a short drive from Sen Monorom.

One of my favorite experiences here was watching both the sunrise and sunset from the mountaintop. On clear nights, the elevated location also makes it one of the best places in Mondulkiri for stargazing.

Pidoma by EHM

Pidoma by EHM is located just outside Sen Monorom, offering a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature. The resort features comfortable accommodations and a small swimming pool where adults and children can relax after a day of sightseeing.

During my visit, the resort was offering a promotion where guests could stay in two connecting rooms for $140 on the first night, and the second night cost only $2. The connecting rooms include one room with two beds and another with one bed, making them ideal for families or small groups. Weekend rates are generally higher on Saturdays and Sundays.

Unlike Nova Resort & Spa, ATV rides are not included in the room rate. Guests can rent an ATV for $60 per hour to explore the surrounding countryside.

Nova Resort & Spa

Nova Resort & Spa offers a choice between cozy studio rooms and spacious private villas. The studio rooms have a cabin-inspired design that creates a glamping-style experience, making them ideal for couples or two adults. The resort also features a small swimming pool where guests can unwind while enjoying the peaceful mountain surroundings.

One of the biggest highlights of staying at Nova Resort & Spa is the complimentary ATV rides. Guests can request ATV rides during their stay, and a staff member will guide each ride along scenic hilltop trails, offering spectacular views of the forests, rolling hills, and countryside.

Studio rooms start at around $68 per night, making Nova Resort & Spa an excellent choice for travelers looking for a relaxing mountain getaway with a unique activity included in the price.

Things to Do in Mondulkiri

Bousra Waterfall

Bousra Waterfall is one of Mondulkiri's most famous attractions and is well worth a visit. Surrounded by lush forest, it's one of the province's most scenic natural landmarks and a popular stop for both local and international visitors.

During my trip, I dressed in the traditional clothing of one of the local Indigenous communities and carried a basket of flowers on my back for a photo session beside the waterfall. It was a fun and memorable experience, and I loved seeing the unique traditional attire that reflects the culture of the region.

Local photographers are available to take professional photos, making it easy to capture your visit without having to rely on selfies or a tripod. Whether you're visiting to admire the powerful waterfall, take beautiful pictures, or simply enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings, Bousra Waterfall is a must-visit destination.

Phnom Nam Lyr

Phnom Nam Lyr (also spelled Phnom Nam Lear) is one of Mondulkiri's most impressive natural landmarks. Located near the Cambodia–Vietnam border, it features dramatic basalt cliffs that overlook forests and valleys within a protected wildlife sanctuary.

The site is considered sacred by the Indigenous Bunong people, adding cultural significance to its stunning natural beauty. After a short walk to the viewpoint, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views, fresh mountain air, and a peaceful atmosphere. It's an ideal place to take in the scenery, enjoy nature, and learn more about the region's cultural heritage.

Dak Dam

Dak Dam is known for its rolling hills, lush green grass, and scattered pine trees that create some of Mondulkiri's most beautiful landscapes. During my visit, we hiked to the top of one of the hills, where travelers had gathered to relax, enjoy music, and take in the breathtaking mountain views.

The peaceful scenery makes Dak Dam a wonderful place to watch the sunset, have a picnic, or simply unwind while appreciating Mondulkiri's cool climate and natural beauty. If you're looking for sweeping views of the highlands and a quiet escape into nature, Dak Dam is definitely worth adding to your itinerary.

How to Get Around

The easiest way to explore Mondulkiri is by renting a scooter or traveling by car. If you're staying in Sen Monorom, many hotels can arrange transportation or recommend local drivers who know the area well.

For attractions such as Bousra Waterfall, Dak Dam, and Phnom Nam Lyr, having your own transportation or hiring a driver is the most convenient option, as many of the sites are spread out across the province. Some hotels also offer guided ATV rides, giving visitors a fun way to experience Mondulkiri's rolling hills and countryside.

If you're not comfortable riding a scooter, hiring a local driver is a safe and stress-free way to visit multiple attractions in a single day while enjoying the scenic mountain roads.

Where to Eat

Most visitors will find the widest selection of restaurants and cafés in Sen Monorom. The town offers everything from traditional Khmer cuisine to Western dishes, coffee shops, and bakeries.

During my visits, I also enjoyed dining at the restaurants located within the resorts. Many serve both Khmer and international dishes while offering beautiful views of the surrounding hills and forests. Dining outdoors in the cool mountain air makes the experience even more enjoyable.

If you're planning to spend the day at attractions like Bousra Waterfall, you'll also find small local food stalls selling drinks, snacks, and Cambodian meals. There are private huts available to rent, making it easy to relax and enjoy your meal while surrounded by nature.

Mondulkiri is also known for its locally grown coffee. If you're a coffee lover, be sure to visit one of the local cafés or coffee plantations to sample freshly grown and roasted coffee from the province.

Travel Tips

Mondulkiri's weather is much cooler than most parts of Cambodia, especially during the early mornings and evenings. If you're visiting between November and January, I recommend bringing a light sweater or jacket to stay comfortable. During the warmer months, however, you'll likely find a jacket unnecessary during the day, as temperatures can still become quite warm.

Many attractions are spread across the province, so planning your route in advance can save both time and fuel. It's also a good idea to start your day early, allowing plenty of time to visit waterfalls, viewpoints, and coffee plantations before sunset.

Wear comfortable walking shoes, especially if you plan to hike or explore scenic viewpoints like Phnom Nam Lyr or Dak Dam. During the rainy season, some trails can become muddy, so footwear with good grip is highly recommended.

Finally, carry cash with you, as some smaller shops, roadside vendors, and local attractions may not accept credit cards. Bringing a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a rain jacket during the wet season will also help make your trip more comfortable.

If you're traveling with children, don't forget to pack insect repellent. Mosquito repellent sprays work well, but mosquito patch stickers can be a convenient alternative because they're easy to apply and don't need to be sprayed directly onto the skin. During my travels, I found the NATPAT Buzz Patch Mosquito Patch Stickers for Kids to be a great option. The fun designs made them enjoyable for children to wear, and they helped reduce mosquito bites while we were spending time outdoors.

Continue Your Journey to Ratanakiri

After exploring Mondulkiri, consider continuing your journey to Ratanakiri, which is approximately a 3-hour driveaway.

Both Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri are known for their breathtaking mountain scenery, waterfalls, rolling hills, lush forests, rich Indigenous cultures, and outdoor adventures. While they share many similarities, each province offers a unique travel experience and its own distinct charm.

Ratanakiri, located farther northeast, is especially famous for its volcanic lakes, spectacular waterfalls, dense forests, gemstone mining, and remote natural beauty. It's an excellent destination for travelers looking to experience Cambodia's less-visited landscapes.

Since these neighboring provinces are so close to one another, they pair perfectly in the same itinerary. If you love nature, cool mountain weather, scenic viewpoints, and peaceful green landscapes, I highly recommend visiting both Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri during the same trip.
