I recently got a $40 keratin hair treatment in Cambodia, and I'm sharing my complete experience, including the cost, treatment process, and results. What Is a Keratin Hair Treatment?
A keratin hair treatment is a salon service designed to make hair smoother, shinier, and easier to manage. It helps reduce frizz and can temporarily straighten wavy, curly, or frizzy hair.
Results typically last 2 to 6 months, depending on your hair type, the formula used, and how well you follow the recommended aftercare.
How Long Does a Keratin Treatment Take?
A keratin treatment usually takes 2 to 3 hours, but my appointment took much longer.
Because I have very thick hair and my stylist was working alone, the entire process lasted about 4½ hours.

My Experience Getting a $40 Keratin Treatment
I chose a small local salon because of the affordable price. While I was excited at first, I also found myself worrying about the potential risks.
During the treatment, I kept wondering whether it could damage my hair or scalp. At one point, I couldn't stop thinking, "What if this causes permanent damage?" Thankfully, everything turned out fine, but those thoughts definitely crossed my mind.
I have very thick hair—something almost every hairstylist has pointed out over the years. Many salons charge extra because of it, but this stylist kept the price at $40, which I really appreciated.
The only downside was that she worked alone, so the appointment took much longer than expected. Sitting in the salon for more than four hours became uncomfortable, and my body started to go numb from staying in the same position for so long.
Fumes and Discomfort During the Treatment
The most uncomfortable part of the appointment happened during the flat-ironing stage.
As the stylist sealed the treatment into my hair, the fumes became noticeable. My throat became irritated, and I started coughing. Breathing in the fumes for an extended period wasn't pleasant, and it was easily the least enjoyable part of the experience.

Step-by-Step Keratin Treatment Process
Here's what my appointment looked like:
I arrived with already-washed hair (which I hadn't planned very well).
My hair was blow-dried and straightened section by section.
The keratin treatment was applied.
My scalp became itchy in some areas.
A few spots had a mild burning sensation, which worried me.
My hair was blow-dried again.
The stylist flat-ironed my hair to seal in the treatment.
By the end of the appointment, my hair looked much smoother, shinier, and straighter.
Aftercare
My stylist recommended waiting 72 hours before washing my hair.
After that, I'll return for a hair spa treatment to:
Help remove any remaining product residue
Restore moisture to my hair
Improve softness and shine

Overall, getting a $40 keratin treatment in Cambodia was an interesting experience.
The price was excellent, especially compared to what similar treatments cost in many other countries. On the other hand, the appointment lasted more than four hours, and the fumes during the flat-ironing process irritated my throat and made me cough.
Despite those drawbacks, I was impressed with how smooth and straight my hair looked immediately afterward.
